Name, school, demographics — none of it requires thought, and knocking it out early builds momentum before you hit anything that actually needs reflection.
Step 2: Treat Activities as a Résumé, Not a List
Don’t just name what you did — show what changed because of it. “Member, Debate Club” tells them nothing. “Grew weekly attendance from 8 to 30 by restructuring practice format” tells them you lead. Impact beats participation every time.
Step 3: Save the Essay for Last — On Purpose
By the time you’ve filled in your activities, awards, and academics, a pattern usually starts to emerge — something you keep coming back to, a thread running through your choices. That thread is often your best essay topic. Writing the essay last lets the rest of the application point you toward it.
Step 4: Take “Optional” Seriously When It’s Relevant
Optional doesn’t mean unnecessary — it means use your judgment. A gap year, a grade that dropped because of something outside your control, a circumstance that shaped your choices: this is where that context belongs. If there’s nothing meaningful to add, skip it without guilt.
Step 5: Fill It Out, Then Walk Away, Then Return
Perfectionism in one sitting usually backfires — you start overthinking sentence three while sentence twelve still needs work. Draft it fully in one pass. Step away for a day. Come back and edit with fresh eyes; you’ll catch things you couldn’t see the first time.
The Common App isn’t a test to pass — it’s a canvas to fill in honestly. Read it calmly, work through it in order, and trust that the story you tell is more convincing than the one you think they want to hear.
